Nokia smartphones are coming in 2017, the company confirms

Next year we shall once again see Nokia smartphones in the wild. The not so surprising news comes from the Finnish company itself, through a slide featured in its investor-focused presentation at the Capital Markets Day event. You can see the relevant slide in the image below, and in it the confirmation for Nokia's return to the smartphone world.
That is, at least as a brand. Nokia the company isn't really going to produce any of the future Nokia-branded devices, it will just act as the owner of the brand and patents, and it will oversee the creation of the new phones. Actually making those will be HMD, a new entity created earlier this year, which will pair Nokia's brand, patents, and oversight, with Foxconn's R&D and manufacturing prowess.

HMD has a ten-year exclusive agreement for using the Nokia brand on mobile phones, and it will pour a minimum of €500 million in marketing in the first three years in which it's going to sell those handsets.
According to past information, Nokia's first new Android smartphones should be released in the second quarter of next year. That means they could very well be unveiled at MWC in February, during Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri's keynote address. Then again, other rumors have said the unveiling would happen before the end of 2016, so we'll have to wait and see what happens. Anyway, it looks like 2017 will be the year of Nokia's comeback in the smartphone space.

5.5-inch version of the Xiaomi Mi Mix purportedly leaks

At last month's Xiaomi event, the Mi Mix stole the show. The near-bezelless smartphone embodies the dreams of many users, even though it doesn't actually have as high a screen-to-body ratio as its maker claims. It does look stunning, however, and as a result it's been selling like hot cakes in China.

You may have read up about it, and you may even be very interested in it, but what if you consider it too big to work for your use cases on a day-to-day basis? It does, after all, have a 6.4-inch display, even if its overall footprint is more akin to that of 6-inch phones.

Still, that could be too much for some people, and Xiaomi apparently knows this. A new leak out of China today claims to show a smaller, 5.5-inch version of the Mi Mix photographed alongside its already unveiled bigger brother. The pictures aren't the best, as you can see, so there's still a chance this might be a hoax of sorts.
Alleged smaller 5.5-inch Xiaomi Mi Mix alongside the 6.4-inch model

But if it isn't, then it's going to be exciting to see how small a footprint it will have. Going by what its bigger sibling has accomplished, this could very well end up being a 5.5-inch screened device comparable in size to competitors with 5.2" or 5.3" panels. Rumored specs for the new Mi Mix variant include the Snapdragon 821 chipset, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage. The SoC would thus be the same as for the bigger Mi Mix, while the internal storage gets downgraded somewhat.

The rumors claim the smaller Mi Mix, reportedly codenamed Nano, will be announced before the end of the year.

Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon 835 will have Quick Charge 4

Qualcomm has announced that it will be partnering with Samsung to manufacture the upcoming Snapdragon 835 mobile processor. It will be based upon Samsung's newest 10nm FinFET process, making it the smallest of its kind.

According to Qualcomm, the new 10nm FinFET process is up to 30 percent more area efficient and offers 27 percent improved performance or 40 percent less power consumption. The reduced footprint will allow hardware manufacturers to make smaller devices or include other components.

The new processor will also be the first to include the new Quick Charge 4. Qualcomm claims Quick Charge 4 provides 20 percent faster charging and 30 percent higher efficiency than Quick Charge 3, thanks to its Dual Charge parallel charge technology. It also supports USB-C and USB Power Delivery standards, which, we assume, means you will be able to fast charge USB-PD devices such as last year's Nexus and the new Pixel phones, as well as the new USB-C MacBooks using a Quick Charge 4 charger.

Quick Charge 4 includes third generation INOV or Intelligent Negotiation for Optimum Voltage, which now provides real-time thermal management. Qualcomm is also introducing two new power management ICs, the SMB1380 and the SMB1381, which have low impedance, up to 95% peak efficiency, and advanced fast charging features such as battery differential sensing.

The Snapdragon 835 is expected to be in devices in the first half of 2017.

Reliance Jio to launch 4G VoLTE feature phones under Rs. 1500 with unlimited voice, video calling

Reliance is gearing up to launch budget 4G feature phones in India that will support Jio 4G VoLTE capabilities. According to a new report from Economic Times Reliance will launch two 4G feature phones priced at about Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,500 early next year. These phones will come with unlimited voice and video calling.

These feature phones will function like smartphones but will not sport a touchscreen. Surprisingly, the report says that the phones will run on Android operating system and come with a keypad as well as front-facing and rear cameras. In addition to Jio’s content applications such as Jio Chat, Live TV and video on demand the feature phones will also come with company’s digital wallet service, Jio Money Wallet.

As per the report, Reliance is working with domestic handset maker Lava International and Chinese original equipment makers to manufacture these feature phones. The initial batch of feature phones could have branding from both Jio and Lava and will be sold through their respective retail channels. The capability to make VoLTE calls in these feature phones will be enabled by chipsets, which Jio plans to source from Chinese company Spreadtrum, while talks are on with Qualcomm and Mediatek.

Although India is the second largest smartphone market, a large number of tier II and tier III population still relies on feature phones. As per latest IDC report, feature phones registered 39.9 Million units in CY Q3 2016 with a healthy 18.6 percent quarter-over-quarter growth.

OnePlus 3T is official with Snapdragon 821 and 3,400 mAh battery, starts at $439

After a week-long teaser campaign and many prior leaks and rumors about it, the OnePlus 3T has finally been made official by the Chinese company today. It looks exactly like the OnePlus 3 (having the same dimensions even), but there's a new color option called "Gunmetal".

On the inside a few things have changed, however. First off, as rumored ad nauseam the 3T is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 821, replacing the SD820 in the older OnePlus handset. The OnePlus 3T has two storage capacity versions, 64 and 128GB respectively, both of the UFS 2.0 kind.
The new phone's rear camera has remained unchanged from the OnePlus 3, with only a sapphire crystal cover added for improved scratch protection. On the other hand, the selfie snapper has received a huge boost in resolution - whereas the OnePlus 3 has an 8 MP Sony sensor, the 3T comes with a 16 MP Samsung-made snapper. The aperture remains the same f/2.0, while pixel size has shrunk from 1.4 nm to 1.0 nm. The exact sensor used is the Samsung 3P8SP, and the selfie cam has phase detection autofocus and support for capturing 1080p video at 30fps.

Finally, the last improved spec might prove to be the most important one for many people - we're talking about the battery capacity. The OnePlus 3T has a 3,400 mAh cell, 400 mAh more than the OnePlus 3. That should obviously ensure better overall battery life. The 20W OnePlus Dash Charge is still supported, and this should translate into very fast charging times. The 3T still runs Android Marshmallow, despite some rumors claiming it would launch with Nougat on board.

The OnePlus 3 was initially available in silver, then a "Soft Gold" version was launched. The OnePlus 3T will be out in "Gunmetal" and "Soft Gold" on November 22 in North America and November 28 in other territories, purchasable as usual directly from the OnePlus online store. It will start at $439 (with 64GB of storage), which is $40 more than the OnePlus 3. The 128GB variant will go for $479. In the EU the prices will be €439 and €479, respectively.

Apple releases iOS beta 10.3 with SOS feature for India

A week since the 10.2 was released, Apple's iOS 10.3 beta is now seeding to testers and brings a few novelties.

For starters Indian users are exclusively getting the SOS feature (which calls emergency services upon multiple presses of the lock button) as the country will soon require iOS devices to have the feature.

The new TV app now replaces the old (and seldom used) Videos app. Beta 3 also marks the return of the Feedback app.

Finally there's a new Love screen effect in iMessage - as seen in the shot above.

Huawei Mate 9 Pro unveiled in China: 5.5-inch QHD dual edge curved display

It looks like rumors claiming Huawei plans to launch a Pro version of its Mate 9 flagship were true after all. The handset maker has just unveiled the Mate 9 Pro along with the standard version in China. Both models are going on sale in China this week, whereas he Porsche Design Mate 9 is likely to hit shelves in mid-December.

Unlike the standard Mate 9 that sports a 5.9-inch full HD (1080p) display, the Pro version comes with a smaller 5.5-inch dual edge curved display that supports a better Quad HD (2560 x 1440 pixels) resolution.

Furthermore, the fingerprint sensor on the back of the regular Mate 9 has been moved in the front in the Mate 9 Pro model. It's been positioned under the Home button, so some may find it easier to use now.

The rest of the phone's specs remain the same, including the Kirin 960 chipset, dual-camera setup, amount of RAM and battery size (4,000 mAh). However, the Mate 9 Pro will cost slightly more than the standard model.
According to Huawei, the Mate 9 Pro will be available for purchase in China for $685 (4GB RAM + 64GB ROM) or $775 (6GB RAM + 128GB ROM). Unfortunately for the elitists, Huawei did not announce a 6GB RAM + 256GB ROM version of Mate 9 Pro, which was rumored to cost around $835 outright.

Huawei did not say anything about the Mate 9 Pro's availability in other countries, so we can't tell whether or not it will be launched in other regions in the coming months.

Vivo V5 and V5 Plus said to feature a whopping 20MP selfie camera

Vivo's V3 and V3Max handset enjoyed quite a bit of popularity in the value segment of the market, after their release earlier this year. However things are now moving at a phenomenal pace and, despite their young age, both handsets are due for an update, if the Chinese OEM wants to stay relevant.
Said update will likely come with the new Vivo V5 and its bigger sibling - the V5 Plus (apparently, the Max moniker is no longer in fashion). The pair have been popping up in the rumor mill from time to time over the past few months, but with no actual information to note. Now, a fresh new leak, suggests both handsets will feature a whopping 20MP front-facing camera. If this comes to pass, then vivo is definitely working hard on its ongoing quest towards a great selfie experience.

Both handsets are also said to come with Funtouch OS 2.6, or Android 6 Marshmallow out of the box, with a Nougat update still a while away. Sadly, that is all the info we have on the V5 Plus. But on the flip side, a full specs sheet has leaked for the vivo V5.

According to it, it will be equipped with a 5.5-inch HD display, which fills the size slot previously occupied by the V3Max, potentially leaving room for an even bigger panel on the V5 Plus. The similarities carry over in some other specs areas as well, like the Snapdragon 652 SoC, 4GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage. Some other V5 internals include an AK4376 Hi-Fi audio chip and, of course, the standard slew of sensors and connectivity options: Wi-Fi, GPS, GLONASS, Acelerometer, Light, Proximity, and E-compass sensor.
The vivo V5 is also a dual-SIM, dual standby device, with support for both FDD-LTE and TD-LTE bands. And last, but not least, a sealed-in 3,000 mAh battery will keep the light on. As for the exterior of the V5, it comes with a metal shell in Gold or Rose Gold color, measuring 153.8 x 75.5 x 7.55 mm. The handset tips the scale at 154 grams.

Vivo is expected to announce the V5 on November 15 in Mumbai with a price tag of under INR 20,000. Around the same time, on November 16, to be exact, the Chinese OEM is said to launch the X9 and X9 Plus handsets on its home market. The latter will likely be pretty similar to the V5 models, but could actually go even a step further in the selfie camera department, with a dual 20MP plus 8MP front-facing setup.Join Flipkart

Mysterious OnePlus Pixel with Snapdragon 820 SoC and 6GB RAM spotted on Geekbench

A mysterious OnePlus smartphone has been spotted on Geekbench. Listed as OnePlus Pixel, the device is powered by a Snapdragon 820 chipset and has 6GB RAM. The handset runs Android Nougat version 7.1.
As you might already know, OnePlus is set to unveil a new phone dubbed OnePlus 3T on November 15. The possibility of the Pixel being 3T is almost nil given that the latter is confirmed to be powered by Snapdragon 821 SoC.

Aside from what the benchmark listing has revealed, nothing else is currently known about the OnePlus Pixel. We'll keep you updated as and when we hear more about the device.

Samsung Galaxy S8 tipped to come in two models, one with 6.2-inch bezel-less display

More details about the Samsung Galaxy S8 have surfaced and this time they are from the popular tipster Evan Blass aka evleaks. According to Blass, Samsung will make two versions of the Galaxy S8 smartphone, one with a 6.2-inch screen and other with a 5.7-inch screen.

The 6.2-inch variant is said to sport a bezel less display. The S8 models are tipped to have model numbers – SM-G950 and SM-G955. It is expected that Samsung will skip the flat screen variant and go with curved display for both the S8 models. Both the phones are tipped to sport thinner bezels. Earlier this week it was reported that the S8 will come with AI assistant service.

Last month,  Samsung confirmed the Galaxy S8 launch for early next year. A company executive also said that Galaxy S8 will sport a “slick design” and “improved camera”. The Galaxy S8 might be the first smartphone to feature optical fingerprint recognition technology so that the fingerprint sensor could be embedded inside the display itself instead of placing it under the home button. As per previous rumors the Samsung Galaxy S8 will be suitable for VR, powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 830 or Samsung Exynos 8895 10nm SoCs and pack 6GB RAM. It is expected to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress 2017 in February and launch it in March.

Alleged Nokia Android phone rear panel leaks, jibes with previous renders

We learned last week that the Finnish company that got licensed the rights to sell Nokia-branded smartphones, will be coming up with a few of those next year. Rumors are that we will see one or two announced come MWC time in early spring, and some more will follow throughout 2017.

There was a render of an alleged Nokia Android phone, codenamed D1C, which depicted a rectangular slab with tapered sides and a center-middle camera setup. Well, today we get the alleged back plate of an upcoming Nokia phone, and it pretty much looks like what we saw in the render.
This particular Nokia phone is said to be a midrange affair, with 1080 x 1920 resolution display, according to some leaked AnTuTu benchmarks. A Snapdragon 430 chipset drives the phone with an octa-core CPU and the Adreno 505 GPU. 3 GB of RAM is inside along with 32 GB of internal storage. On the back of the phone will be a 13MP camera, while an 8MP camera in front handles selfies and video chats. Oh, well, at least it seems crafted out of metal, and there will apparently be a marketing blitz behind its launch.

Foxconn's next India facility to be in Navi Mumbai

NEW DELHI: Foxconn is planning to set up its next manufacturing factory in India — in Navi Mumbai — which will be the first plant from the contract producer in Maharashtra, but will be separate from the $5 billion investment committed under an MoU with the state signed last year.

Sources familiar with the plans of the world’s largest contract manufacturer said that Foxconn's greenfield unit in Navi Mumbai will entail an initial investment of $20-30 million, from where it will start by making mobile phones, and gradually move on to other products.

"The Navi Mumbai plant will be set up by early next year, with a target capacity of about 2 million a month," a senior industry executive said, asking not to be named.

"To start with, mobile phones will be made, which is the high volume category in India, followed by mechanics design," this person added. An email sent to Foxconn Technology Group did not elicit any response till press time on Thursday.

In August last year, Foxconn Group chairman Terry Gou signed an MoU with the Maharashtra government for investing $5 billion (about Rs 34,000 crore) in the state to set up multiple manufacturing facilities for products including iPhones, tablets, spread over five years.

The investment plan would have generated a minimum of 50,000 jobs in the state. However, with a year down, the first investments under the agreement are yet to come. The Navi Mumbai plant will be counted as a separate investment, another source said.

Foxconn entered India with its first manufacturing facility as a supplier to Nokia in the Sriperumbudur SEZ in Chennai several years ago, but it had to shut down the 300-acre facility due to labour issues coupled with Nokia stopping production of phones.

The Taiwanese contract manufacturer re-entered the world's fastest growing smartphone market last year with a mobile phone assembly plant in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, which it expanded to five plants with a total capacity of about 12-13 million a year. By the end of the year, this capacity will be doubled, EThad reported earlier.

After restarting operations — which happened post the government's Make in India initiative — Foxconn has invested about $600 million so far, which includes its investments in Snapdeal and messaging app Hike.

"Since last year, we have restarted operations and right now we're finalising the 2017 plan — there will be more expansion," Foxconn's head of India operations Josh Foulger said a fortnight ago.

"In semiconductors, the industry is looking at assembly, test, mark, and pack (ATMP), which includes 21 component categories that makes it attractive for companies like Foxconn and other suppliers to support this ecosystem," Foulger said.

Samsung to start Android Nougat beta program for the Galaxy S7 edge

Samsung is notoriously known for one of the slowest OEMs to release major firmware updates since the company has so many phones, and the phones have so many software modifications. The Korean phone maker is soon launching a beta program (at least for users in the US and UK) with the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge (presumably the S7 as well) where selected users will be able to install the Android Nougat update for beta testing.

With a beta program, customers (willing) can try out the latest software, complete with bugs and glitches to in exchange for reporting any inconsistencies in the software. The XDA Thread explains that the APK posted on the thread is to sign up for the Samsung Beta Program in the UK.

Granted, the beta program has not yet been officially announced by Samsung yet, however XDA-Developer member mariolcela started a thread where you can download the “Galaxy Beta Program” app which was visible on the ‘Galaxy Apps’ store from our US-carrier branded Galaxy S7 edge. It installed fine but the app kept showing us server errors. Users in the UK are reporting they are able to successfully register at this time.
